Background Information / history:
Nicodemus was named after a biblical person as his parents had thought that it would make him seem a lot 'posher' than he was due to their relatively low paying jobs and addictions. For the first few years of his life, Nicodemus took the abuse of his parents by his own, wondering what he had done to deserve such treatment. But when his baby sister Evangeline was born he swore to himself, even from an early age, that he would protect her.
So whenever she cried too loudly as a baby and angered their drunk father he would do something else, like throw his dad's beer bottle against the wall, to have all of the anger directed at him instead. He took the beatings through the years so that his sister never had to. In recent years the beatings were becoming less frequent but more brutal as his father was quickly realising that he was becoming old enough and strong enough that one day soon they'd have a fight and Nicodemus would win. Thankfully the zombie apocolypse took both his parents before this showdown could happen.
